There's a new criminal on the scene in "The Dark Knight" and he calls himself the Joker. Heath Ledger earned a posthumous Academy Award for his demented portrayal of the Joker, which became one of his final roles seen by audiences after his accidental suicide in 2008. (His final film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was only half completed at his death.) Ledger's performance overshadowed that of Christian Bale, who returned to play Batman in this sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." The film, directed, co-written and produced by Christopher Nolan, also stars returning cast members Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman. Newcomers to the cast include Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal. "The Dark Knight" became one of only three films in history to break the $500 million mark in North America and landed a spot among the Top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. It received eight Academy Award nominations. Aside from Ledger's performance, the film won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.
