Beyoncé Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, in 1980 and is a singer-songwriter, actress, and record producer. As a child she entered several singing and dancing competitions, and when she was eight years old she got her first widely promoted gig as a member of the girl band Girl Tyme. Girl Tyme later changed its name to Destinys Child when Knowles was 13, and Columbia Records signed them in 1997. In that same year the group recorded their debut song for the Men in Black soundtrack and went on to become one of the best-selling girls groups of all time. After winning several awards and a Grammy, two group members left at the end of the 1990s and Knowles suffered a bout of depression. After Destinys Childs third album and a Christmas album in 2001, the group went on hiatus. The early 2000s saw film success for Knowles as she starred in The Fighting Temptations and Austin Powers in Goldmember, and in addition to acting she released her first solo album in 2003: Dangerously in Love. She earned two Golden Globe nominations for her 2006 role in Dreamgirls, and in 2010 she was ranked by Forbes as one of the 100 Most Powerful and Influential musicians in the world. Over the course of her career shes won a Billboard Millennium Award, 11 MTV Video Music Awards, 16 Grammy Awards, and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star with Destiny's Child.
