Britney Spears was born in 1981 and began attending dance lessons at age three. She made her big break in 1992 when she was cast in the Mickey Mouse Club, and in 1997 she signed with Jive Records. Only two years later, she released her first album, Baby One More Time, and toured as an opening act for N Sync. That album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 U.S. chart and went platinum within a month of its release to become the biggest selling album ever by a teenage artist. In 2000, Spears released her second album, Oops!...I Did it Again, which also debuted at #1 in the U.S. As she moved forward to release her third album, controversy began to thicken around her provocative image. This controversy heightened in 2003 when she kissed Madonna during the MTV Video Music Awards. Spears was undeterred by any commentary and took more control of her fourth album, In the Zone, by writing and co-producing most of the material. In 2004 Spears married her childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander in Vegas, but the marriage was annulled only 55 hours later. However, later that year she became engaged to Kevin Federline, three months after they met, and the pair were married in October. Shortly after, her career went into a brief hiatus, and after the release of her fifth album her erratic behavior caused her to be placed in a conservatorship. After releasing seven studio albums, Spears is noted as being the eighth top selling female artist in America and the eighth Artist of the 2000s by Billboard.
