Based on the surprising success of its predecessor "Paranormal Activity" as well as other low-budget horror movies like "The Blair Witch Project," "Paranormal Activity 2" was given a larger budget than the original and served as a prequel to the 2007 film by beginning two months before and following up with events that occurred in the first film. It was released near Halloween in 2010. Intended to give the same cinema verite experience as the first film, much of the film's action is seen through security cameras installed at the home of Kristi (Sprague Grayden) and Dan Rey (Brian Boland). Though viewers spend much of the film staring at stagnant rooms in the house, it becomes apparent that a demon is after the Reys' newborn son Hunter and the family becomes more terrorized by a presence in their home. "Paranormal Activity 2" set a new record by having the biggest opening for a horror movie in history. It earned more than $41.5 million in its first weekend, becoming No. 1 at the box office, and went on to earn $177.5 million worldwide.
