"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is the fourth installment in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and the first to be directed by Rob Marshall, who replaced the director of the previous three films, Gore Verbinski. Johnny Depp returns in another swashbuckling adventure as quirky Captain Jack Sparrow who is searching this time for the Fountain of Youth, which the notorious pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz) also have in their crosshairs. When the mystical Angelica abducts Sparrow, her former lover, and enlists him to help her father find the fountain, they enter a race between the English and the Spanish to see who can reach the fountain first and distill its secrets. Though it broke box office records and stands among the Top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, "On Stranger Tides" was flayed by critics for its unimaginative story. Having been filmed with some of the same kinds of cameras used to make "Avatar" in 2009, "On Stranger Tides" was shown in 3D during its original release in theaters. Legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, Depp's inspiration for the character of Sparrow, shows up again in this film as Captain Teague, having first appeared in 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End."
