The original movie that launched a never-ending franchise, "Saw" was a low-budget, independent horror film that created a buzz among moviegoers by showing plenty of gore in gut-wrenching scenes that had characters maiming and dismembering themselves in order to escape from trapped situations. Directed by James Wan, the convoluted plot involves a search for a sadistic game player who enjoys putting his victims in terrifying predicaments whose solutions require them to make unthinkable choices. The first installment involves two men locked in a subterranean bathroom. Their captor has given them opposing missions: One of them is required to escape, while the other is directed to murder the first man before he can achieve his freedom. The men are gruesomely reminded of the consequences of their failure by a corpse in the middle of the room. The unqualified success of the first "Saw" led to a string of sequels, the latest being "Saw 7." Writer Leigh Whannell characterized "Saw" as a psychological thriller, rather than a torture film. The movie features Danny Glover in a career low as a police detective on the trail of the person behind the sadistic scenarios.
