Until it was pushed from its pedestal by another James Cameron film, "Avatar," in 2009, "Titanic" floated atop the list of highest-grossing films of all time in the No. 1 position for 12 years. Released in 1997, the movie became a global phenomenon, with Cameron's devotion to authentically recreating scale sets of the original ship, jaw-dropping computer-generated imagery, and a dramatic story line that included both love and adventure. It commanded the box office as the No. 1 film for 15 consecutive weeks. It was also the first movie to break the $1 billion threshold worldwide. The story about treasure salvagers learning of a shipboard romance as it is told by one of the last living survivors of the maritime disaster is completely fictionalized. However, Cameron incorporates actual Titanic passengers into the story and was known on the set for his strict adherence to details to replicate the doomed ocean liner. The film stars Leonardo DeCaprio and Kate Winslet as the story's star-crossed lovers. The movie tied with "All About Eve" by getting 14 Academy Award nominations and 11 Oscar wins, receiving the prizes for Best Picture and Best Director.
