Mega action movie director Michael Bay in 2007 brought to life the warring Autobots and Decepticons, alien robots who can morph instantly into everyday machinery, in a movie based on the Transformers line of toys. Shia LaBeouf plays Sam Witwicky, a teenager caught up in the struggles of the alien robots as the evil Decepticons attempt to create an army out of Earth's machines and take over the universe by gaining control of the All Spark that brought them to life. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer. "Transformers" grossed more than $709 million and took the last spot on 2007's list of Top 5 highest grossing films, behind "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Spider-Man 3," and "Shrek the Third." Fans of the Transformers comic books and television programs criticized the film for focusing on humans while making the robots supporting players. There were also outcries from faithful fans because many of the main Transformers characters had been drastically redesigned for the film. On the other hand, fans were pleased to see the casting of Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, who was the voice of Autobots leader Optimus Prime and Ironhide in the original "Transformers" series.
